The Pen y Cymoedd Apprentices go offshore

Three years ago we interviewed hundreds of local young people. Four apprentices were taken on to train to become wind turbine technicians. After two years of study at Neath and Llandrillo Colleges, the apprentices have now started on their practical training. Vattenfall, in conjunction with local company Isofab, has followed the four apprentices’ progress closely as they’ve developed and taken on new challenges – with one even having to learn to swim to complete his offshore rescue training!

“We’re coming to a successful conclusion on the part of the project focussed on laying cable ducting under the A4061 and we’ve already finished the work in the Hirwaun industrial estate. A specialist construction team from Balfour Beatty has been delivering this on ABB’s behalf. And since the industrial estate team has already completed their section, they have now joined their colleagues to help finish the work on the A4061 within the next few weeks, ahead of schedule.

Progress report….community fund


We’re now in the final stages of getting through the community fund ideas – it’s been inspiring looking through all the potential that the community sees for themselves for the future. It’s a challenging time for lots of communities. Big budget cuts and changes in the ways things can be funded are now a reality – it’s a moving picture. Of course this is a challenge for the work to establish the fund. How do you think of the future when there is a lot of need developing in the here and now? But when we’re talking about 20 years plus of funding it’s also creates an opportunity – to sit down, think things through and plan for the future.
