About the project

21.05.14 mh Pen y Cymoedd Site 60

Pen y Cymoedd Wind Energy Project is a 76 turbine development located on land managed by Natural Resources Wales within Rhondda Cynon Taf and Neath Port Talbot. Once operational the project will generate enough electricity to meet the domestic need of 140,000 homes per annum.

Construction commenced in February 2014. The Jones Bros / Balfour Beatty Joint Venture are responsible for delivering the civil works for the wind farm and ABB are reponsible for implementing the grid connection.

Here is a timeline of what is happening when:

February 2014 – 2016: Civil and electrical works, including construction of the site welfare compound, site access tracks, turbine foundations, crane pads, underground cabling and substation
Late 2015: Turbine deliveries, civil works continue
Early 2016: Turbine installation expected to begin
Late 2016: The wind farm is commissioned
Early 2017: Project completion

Pen y Cymoedd Community Fund

Once operational the project will provide a Community Fund of £1.8 million per annum for more than 20 years. More than 3000 residents of the upper Rhondda, Cynon, Afan and Neath Valleys had their say on what they think the money could do in the area. There is huge potential within all the ideas that have come in – developing the possibilities so they can deliver maximum  benefit is the next task for the community.
