Introducing the Board of Directors for the Community Fund

Transport

We are delighted to be able to announce the appointment of Board Members to the Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm Community Fund CIC (Community Interest Company).

An independent body is being established to manage the £1.8 million per year Community Fund for more than twenty years, to support communities in the upper Afan, Cynon, Neath and Rhondda, hosting the project.

An open and transparent recruitment process attracted more than 150 high calibre applications to form the first Board of Directors from across the area and beyond. A panel, comprising independent local knowledge and health and well-being expertise selected the first six directors of the CIC. The Directors of the CIC are an experienced and locally connected team. They are:

To ensure both continuity and renewal, some of the Directors will serve one three year term of office, while others may serve two terms. This arrangement means there will be an opportunity to refresh the Board every three years. Successive recruitment and appointment to the Board will be the responsibility of the Board.

The Board met for the first time recently, and is beginning to plan their next steps. The expected timeline is as follows:

  • Advertise for and appoint a suitably experienced and skilled manager. This person will undertake the day to day management and provide strategic leadership for the brand new fund and should be in post within three months.
  • Establish clear guidance regarding the application process by Autumn 2016
  • The fund will be launched when the wind farm starts operating (end of 2016/early 2017).

A considerable amount of preparatory work has been undertaken, resulting in the Pen y Cymoedd Community Fund Prospectus. This document outlines the various aspirations and ambitions for the fund by the communities within the area of benefit. This Prospectus provides the initial, 5-year, guidance for the Fund’s decisions. The CIC will be considering development of an application and assessment processes to enable access to the Fund by the local community, and to enable the Board of Directors to make informed decisions regarding the distribution of funding by a variety of means, including grants, assistance to social enterprises and loans.

Vattenfall will provide support to the CIC, and are happy to relay messages to them as part of the handover process.
