I joined Vattenfall over the Summer of 2016 as a Turbine Technician and I am based at Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm, living nearby in Pontygwaith. Before working for Vattenfall I did a range of jobs from metal fabricating to customer focused office work. Fairly unrelated to what I do now! That’s why I believe I was in the right place at the right time when I applied to, and was successful in getting a place in the first Wind Turbine Apprenticeship Programme in Wales.
The Programme was funded by Vattenfall in conjunction with local company Isofab and Neath Port Talbot College. As part of this I spent one year at Neath Port Talbot College, one year at a North Wales college and around 18 months working at Vattenfall’s Thanet Offshore Wind Farm, off the coast of Kent.
I am looking forward to getting stuck in within the Vattenfall PyC Team along with Siemens, the turbine manufacturer to maintain and service the turbines, allowing Pen y Cymoedd to operate as smoothly as possible. I don’t think there are many industries developing as fast as this one and I am pleased that I am part of it. It’s definitely not a line of work for people who want a normal 9 til 5 desk job.
