Apprenticeship leads to life-changing career opportunity in renewables


Michael Leach from Pontypridd has benefitted from a life-changing career opportunity in an industry he truly believes in, thanks to the Welsh Government’s apprenticeship programme.

Michael, 31, is one of the first people to complete the new Level 3 Apprenticeship in Wind Turbine Operations and Maintenance in Wales. This has meant overcoming significant challenges including returning to the classroom after many years and travelling long distances from home.

Apprentice wins National award

Michael Leach, one of the apprentices taken on as part of the Pen y Cymoedd project has won Apprentice of the Year Award at the recent Renewable UK Gala Dinner.

Michael was part of a training scheme in which Vattenfall worked with local company Isofab to give four individuals, living locally to Pen y Cymoedd Wind Energy Project, the chance to participate in a 3 year course, including practical training on two of Vattenfall’s offshore wind farms, where the apprentices have been fully integrated into their relevant teams.
