Neath Hospital League of Friends Donation

Mike Davies, Local Photographer chooses Neath Hospital’s League of Friends to benefit from photos taken of Vattenfall’s wind turbine components.

For several weeks Mike Davies, 72 from Cadoxton, Neath has been taking photos of Vattenfall’s turbine component deliveries and installations for their 76 turbine, 228 MW Pen y Cymoedd Wind Energy Project, currently being constructed on Natural Resources Wales’ Managed Estate. With 684 abnormal loads travelling from Swansea Docks to site from November 2015 to Summer 2016 and installations taking place between January 2016 and late 2016, Mike has not been short of material for his collection.

Public Site Visits 2016

Last year 300 of you joined us for a site visit to see the turbine foundations under construction. With all 76 turbine foundations now complete, turbine installations are now well underway and we would like to invite you to join us to come and see the cranes in action. Please register your interest here and we will forward your joining instructions closer to the time of your visit.

Vattenfall and turbine supplier Siemens have been working closely to ensure that each turbine is of the highest standard possible. Each turbine component is inspected whilst on the ground, with minor repairs taking place if there has been even the slightest bit of damage in transit. Following this each component is washed thoroughly.

Turbine installations – some facts!

3rd pre assembly

As of Friday last week, 105 of 684 abnormal loads had been successfully delivered to the site from Swansea Docks. Later this week we expect our contractor to begin delivering the turbine blades to site in convoys of up to three abnormal loads. Each blade is the lightest component at 11.3 tonnes, yet the longest component at 55 metres.

Turbine tower installations continue

3rd pre assembly

We expect to install the first two tower sections of up to six turbines this week (weather dependent). The tower stumps that will be installed are known as the pre-assembly for each turbine. The remainder of the turbine components for each turbine in the Spring and Summer of this year.
